Why is the real time clock frequency at 32.768KHz?

The frequency of a real time clock varies with the application. The frequency 32,768Hz is often used, because it is a power of 2 (2^15). You can get a precise 1 second perid (1Hz frequency) by using a 15 stage binary counter. This frequency is a compromise between the number of stages required to get 1 Hz and the difficulty of building lower frequency crystals (are physically large).

An example of Real Time Clock is the DS32KHZ, from Maxim-Dallas. It is a TCXO (temperature compensate crystal oscillator).
