hi,

i have a question annoying me,

what is the difference between the 2 red words below:

1- Spartan-3A Starter Kit Includes:
Spartan-3A XC3S700A, 700K system gate FPGA

2- Spartan-3E Starter Kit Includes:
Spartan-3E XC3S500E, 500K Gate FPGA

thanks a lot

difference between spartan 3a and spartan 3e

The gate counts in Xilinx sales literature have always been a joke. They are just marketing fluff. The same thing holds true for the speed grade. The speed grade numbers are arbitrary and you cannot compare across device families. Same thing with the part numbers, they are random and you cannot draw comparisons across families.

The only way to compare, is to get the full data sheets and compare :
Number of I/O
Number of Block RAM
Number of SLICEs
Number of DCMs
Number of clocks per quadrant.

Those items often get you a better idea of how the parts compare.

I think that the most important point you must know about is what resource you really need. Is the chip has the necessary and enough resource your design need. for example multiplier, mac core and etc. just as what banjo has said.
