I am investigating using ultracapacitors as a substitute for a SLA battery for a UPS application. I came across a few manufacturers of ultracapaitors with values of 3000F for a single large cell cap but have low (2.7V) operating ratings.
I would like to place the caps in series to increase the overall voltage provided but I understand I may need additional components to balance the voltage across each cap due to the capacitor ESR. I heard that there are a few ways of doing this - the easiest is to put a large resistor in paralel across each cap. Not sure how to determin the value of resistor or how it will effect efficiency.
This sound like something that is commonly performed but I have found very little detailing.
