First of all you may know the meaning of LAN: Local Area Network

10/100 is the supported data transfer rate. Current LANs are most likely to be based on switched IEEE 802.3 Ethernet running at 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps or 1,000 Mbps.

A Mbps (megabit per second) is a unit of data transfer rate equal to 1,000,000 bits per second or 1,000 kilobits per second.

Some devices like a NIC (Network interface card), Swicth or Hub have the posibility of using them in one of two transfer rate.

When you see:
10 Mbps: This device only could work at 10 Mbps
100 Mbps: This device only could work at 100 Mbps
1000 Mbps or 1Gbps: This device only could work at 1000 Mbps
10/100 Mbps: This device could work at 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps
100/1000 Mbps: This device could work at 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps

In LAN Networks the data transfer is limitated by the media (copper, fiber, etc) and the devices you use (nic, hub, switches, routers, etc).

10 is for 10Mbs / 100 is for 100 Mbs , if your device support that kinda link , this means it can be connected to the networks with those compatiblities , if it is switch it can support 10 Mbs for some ports and 100 mbs or Fast ethernet for the others.

10/100 means the line can accept 10 mbps n also 100mbps n the other datarates in between

There are NO other datarates "in between".

I'm agree with sinip, there's no datarates "in between". It's one or the other.

Old network cards and hubs/switches support ony 10Mbps

now a day card/switch support 100Mbps and 1000Mbps

10/100Mbps means it support both 10Mbps and 100Mbps with auto negotiation

Just to clarify some ideas here....

A bit it is not a unit of information, you need 8 bits to represent a unit of info.

8 bits = 1 byte, the byte represent a character of one of your keys in your keyboards.

It takes 8 bits to represent a character.
