I see. That's what you meant "protocol reset".
Rule of thumb: use syn reset whenever you can. Use Asyn reset only when necessary.
Take your USB reset for example, if there's any chance that the reset being issued when clock is unavailable, use asynchrounous reset. But don't use it to reset all registers...reset those "necessary" registers.
