two ADC's for higher resolution?

Can two identical 8 bit ADC's be used in parallel to get 16 bit conversion?
 

Unfortunatelly not.
If you need 16-bit conversion you have to use 16-bit device.

I thought it would be possible to let one adc convert the positive half cycle and the other to conver the negative half cycle of the signal,isn't this possible?
 

It is possible to double the resolution. By stacking two 8 bit ADCs you can improve the resolution with 1 bit only.

another way is to actually create what is called a "pipe line" this way:
use your 8bit adc to get an 8 bit result, use an 8 bit DAC to convert the digital word back to analog form, use an opamp to subtract this from the original signal, and amplify it by about 256, and then use the other 8bit ADC to convert the new residue to digital, this way you can achieve some 12bits of resolution (1.5 bits per stage is typical) but keep in mind that this technique requires a very good calibration phase, and very good matching between components which might not be avaiable in discrete world... but many ultra high speed, high resolution ADCs use this pipeline concept...
