Recommendation FPGA + Camera Sensor for capturing still image (2019)

Hi, can anyone recommend an EVN or stacked FPGA system for capturing a still image? preferred 720p.

I would like to trigger a snapshot - freeze the video and transfer the image via USB to a PC (via FTDI or Cypress USB chipset).
The picture should only be transferred once the trigger occurred.

This would be my first application with a camera sensor, so it's mostly for educational purpose, alternatively if there are other ways to achieve that (using asics only) I would also be interested in that.
However the main purpose is still learning about camera sensors + fpga + memory, maybe there's a board out there which is suitable for that?

I read about the lattice hdr-60 how about that one?

    DCMI+FPGA proof of concept:
https://www.arducam.com/ (DCMI parallel port +FPGA+SDRAM, i think fpga design is not open source, but as proof of concept)

    DCMI+FPGA dev board:
search for "alinx fpga camera", differend dev boards, few cameras (single, dual).

    MIPI_to_GPIO+FPGA:
http://www.terasic.com.tw/cgi-bin/pa...nglish&No=1011 (Interesting solution MIPI to GPIO parallel and then to FPGA)

Lattice looks good, but I would try it only if I had more experience or many time for learning. With lattice I would try to find some mipi camera module with pinout and try it with machXO2 or machXO3 board.

Re: Recommendation FPGA + Camera Sensor for capturing still image (2019)

    Hi,

the HDR60 is a pretty good platform, unfortunately not too easy to obtain. The successor (Lattice EVDK/VIP) on the other hand is up to date, there used to be promo actions where you could get them for ~199 USD, but for Ethernet/USB you'd need an extra board on top. There are a few reference designs around for MJPEG or YUV streaming to a PC (using gstreamer) or you can output to HDMI directly. However, the MIPI Sony sensors on the EVDK are a pain with timing, maybe not too fun to begin with, unless you exactly use the settings from the reference design. Also, there's no official datasheet or register documentation as far as I'm up to date.
