digital encoding formats

Guys I forgot the basics about the digital encoding format(NRZ,Manchester...) ,I googled around a bit but could not find few things like:

1)Why is that DC component is not preferred while transmitting data.
2)How can you do clock recovery from the transmitted data.

And also please suggest websites to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each of the digital encoding formats clearly in regards to the spectrum of the transmitted signals and BER.

Thank you in advance
