I'd like to know which one is best for set top box among these famous rtos: VxWorks, QNX Neutrino, WinCE.net, RT-Linux, ThreadX, eCos, pSOSystem, or others?

Thanks

Re: Which RTOS is best for Set top box?VxWorks/rt-linux/qnx/

It depends alot on what your set top box needs to do, but linux is very good. Standard linux would probably be alright (instead of RT-Linux) but that would depend what you need to do. eCos, pSOS and ThreadX are probably too "small". I have heard QNX is also very good. Stay away from WinCE its shit!

There are 3 level of application for set top box, base application, enhanced application, and totally interactive application.
Why eCos, pSOS and ThreadX are probably too "small"?
Isn't pSOS as good as, or say as "big" as VxWorks?
What about VxWorks vs QNX Neutrino vs every kind of linux(no matter realtime or not)?
And any comment on Nucleus?

Re: Which RTOS is best for Set top box?VxWorks/rt-linux/qnx/

may be that VxWorks is completed and more simple to develope, but is not free.
Bye.

what about eCos? free and small.

Depends at hardware that you want to use.
QNX , wince adn linux are simple to port and develop.

BSP for WinCE is quite expansive.
but QNX for IPAQ is more simple....

With WinCE Platform Builder come multiple sample BSP for each processor.

Re: Which RTOS is best for Set top box?VxWorks/rt-linux/qnx/

also there are some open source Linux Real time systems:

ART Linux
RealTimeLinux.org
RTLinux- see this: RTLinux.com

Re: Which RTOS is best for Set top box?VxWorks/rt-linux/qnx/

Standard linux should do a nice job for multimedia type of real time... But, try your best to get a 2.6 kernel going with your set top. The latency improves quite a lot.... Many distro targeting "small" device are based on earlier kernel (2.0, 2.2)...

Re: Which RTOS is best for Set top box?VxWorks/rt-linux/qnx/

wince is best ,most company use it in PDA.

Re: Which RTOS is best for Set top box?VxWorks/rt-linux/qnx/

Vxworks is not for soft real time system
i would suggest RTlinux at www.fsmlabs.com

Re: Which RTOS is best for Set top box?VxWorks/rt-linux/qnx/

Maybe rt-Linux is better.

VxWorks is not a good choice for applications such as STB.

Because STB doesn't need a GUI, so linux will be the best choice. It depends if your CPU has a MMU. If no, you can choose uclinux, quite easy to port. Otherwise, you have to use QNX or other RT linux supporting MMU.

Re: Which RTOS is best for Set top box?VxWorks/rt-linux/qnx/

I am usig VxWorks

I'm useing linux 2.4.2x A time ago i modified the 16c550 serial driver in to adapt it to my specific application.
Would it be possible if I used wince instead?

Bye

I'm using uCos and trying using uITRON , but using RTOS in STB make it large so the cost cannot low

jhonny_yang: hemm.. what did you mean? STB market is ..?

bye

Re: Which RTOS is best for Set top box?VxWorks/rt-linux/qnx/

i would suggest you to use National Instruments Real Time systems.... Very powerful yet easy to use...
