dc cable ampacity

Does ampacity (current rating or current-carrying capacity)
also means absolute maximum current for the cable?

Thank you.

current carrying capacity

Depends on who is quoting the value. If it's NEC, then yes. You'll find that values are often quoted in regards to a temperature rise or a voltage drop. This has implications in regards to the insulation rating, and/or the allowed voltage drops within the application.

You can drive more current than rated, but you need to protect the conductor/insulator from the destructive effects of heat.

dc ampacity

Hi GetDeviceInfo,

I have been confuse by some of the data provided in the website on ampacity rating.

example:
a cable of AWG16 has a current limit of about 3A,
while another reference indicates that the current is 22A.
The current ampacity different is too wide.

Base on my computation guess.
I think that both is correct as your description.
Can I say that 22A is the absolute maximum of the cable?
and that 3A is the recommended current limit through the cable.
So any current greater 22A is effectively dangerous
as the cable might be burned out one day.

Can I say that the ampacity of a given cable is applicable to DC and AC current.?

Thank you for your advise.

dc current ampacity

currents ratings are applicable to DC or AC.
Sorry, I can't say what you could say about the subject.
