Can anybody help me how to detect the presence of an object with in a short distance only. What kind of sensors do you recommend? Any circuit or links would help a lot.

hi
well detecting an object in small distance can be carried out in most cases by using IR sensors.

check the above link

Yes IR is the best

put a ir transmitter in one side and receiver on the other.

a simple tv remote ir led and tv receiver (tsop) is enough for that.

If the object is metal you can use some inductive sensors.Else you can use capacitive or optical sensors.

yeh, you can used the IR (infrared) sensors, capacitive/inductive sensor's for shorter range of distance.
