What to use (motor) for a particular application ? How to determine that ? thanks

What to use (motor) for a particular application ?

How to determine that ? I mean to ask that when to use geared motor, when to use stepper motor, when to use servo motor, when to use AC motor of any phase whether single or 3 phase & when to use DC motor ?

That is a question in broad perspective of Physics.
As hobbyist you would design things according to availability of motors in most cases.
For professional level you would need to consider a lot of things torque,speed,AC or DC operation.
The major constraint on motor operation is of thermal nature.
Operating temperature, ambient temperature, rise in motor temperature with increase in operating time or load,Available and required voltage/current,output torque required, output speed required,current required due to load, no load current,idle conditions,operational requirements in stall conditions.And a lot more.
You need to study some books on the topic or try Google.

Gear motors are used when use of economical low-power motors to provide great motion force at low speeds is required.
Servo motors are used for correct positioning systems.
Stepper motors are used where large power is required in compact size and good accuracy.

Gear motors Can be either AC or DC.
Servo motors are also available for both types but for industrial motors are preferred in AC types (they really powerful beasts as compared to their size).
About stepper Motors,I have seen just DC types.Don,t know if AC types exist.

AS i said earlier it depends on your requirements for your designs or your design depends on the availability if cost is concern.
There is a hell of lot of models and types and configurations available for selection for tiny tiny to tons of weight and more are being poured into market every day by the manufacturers from all around the world.
