intelligent switching mechanism via sms

hi im working with my new project can anybody help me which microcontroller and modem i should use to work with my project. basically, im not very familiar with microcontrollers and gsm modem and the programming it involve. i really need your help guys. i would appreciate your suggestions maybe tutorials. thank you so much.

brief description:
when you forgot to turn off your appliance at home you will recieve a text message after, say, 30 min that an appliance is still operating. and you can send back an sms to turn it off.

it should would with any MCU with serial interface.. choose modem that is available in your area and MCU you like to work with
 

im not familiar with MCU's can you help me decide which MCU i should use?

you are not also familiar with MCU so you are also not familiar how to program MCU?
I think it would be better if you study how to program mCU first befor engaging any embedded applications..

you can use PIC16f690, PIC16f628, PIC16f877a or etc
 
but it is possible that i can achieve the purpose of my project? do i need a pc connected to a modem?

yes it's possible if you really want to study or finish your goal.. :)

if your aim is to switch appliances via sms then you don't need a PC in this case because mircocontroller can do this task alone without PC..

choose mcu and modem you want to work with so that you can start developing..
 
Yes..I am agree with romel_emperado....Its better to choose MCU than PC....So that you can control it with any one like via SMS, using IR technology, RF technlogy, DTMF technology...So first choose MCU(I suggest AT89S51)....understand all about that...after that you can start programming...
 
is there any mobile phones can i use instead of a GSM module?
