CNC CRT to LCD conversion help

Hi guys,

First time poster long timer lurker. I am converting over a CNC CRT controller to an LCD. The CNC we got had an old system from 1994 and it appears the computer system has been tampered with and beyond salvage. We have decided to instead convert it over to a modern software platform (Mach3). The reason why I have came to you guys is because I am looking for suggestions for LCD monitors and their respectable dimensions. We have thought of two different ways to convert it over:

1) First use the old box and just replace the CRT with a similar size LCD.
2) Turn the box long ways, mount a bigger LCD and use a pedant.

The problem is that it is hard to find any LCD panel dimensions that would work for the replacement of the CRT.
The original CRT appears to be 13" maybe 14" diagonal.

So my question is if anyone knows where to find specs (dimensions) for some typical 13 and 14 inch monitors to get a rough estimate. I need the same thing for 15, 17, and 19 inch also.

If anyone knows where to find these typical monitor dimensions and actually has something that they can measure it would sure help quite a bit.

I can take pictures of the front panel if you guys are interested.
 

In general, most LCDs have a 1" to 1.5" wide bezel around the main screen, and are 1-2" thick (quick measure of the one I'm staring at).

Older displays are approximately 4:3 aspect ratio, so you can use similar triangles to find the algebra equations to calculate the X/Y screen dimensions (then add 1-1.5" on each side).

X=4, Y=3, diagonal = sqrt(3^2 + 4^2) = 5 (remember the 3-4-5 triangle from geometry class?)
So the equations of similar edges would be...
5/D = 4/X and 5/D = 3/Y

If you wanted a 17" display (diagonal length), then X and Y are found like so.
5/17 = 4/X, solve for X = 13.6
5/17 = 3/Y, solve for Y = 10.2
Which matches up pretty close when I break out the ruler.

Overall dimensions would then be:
X+1+1 (1" plastic bezel on each side) = 12.2" by 15.6"
 

I used to be a service engineer for cross's and I've done this a few times, rs components and cpc do chassis versions of tft and lcd flat panel monitors, theres usually something you can use and will fit, you just might have to make a shutter out of some black plastic.
Watch out for the video standard, fanuc and heidenhain use some odd ball stuff, some 800 b's have a sync on green video adaptor and some heidenhain's use a strange video standard, you can buy all kinds of video standard adaptors but make sure you know what your getting and that theres a good chance of it working first.
Theres a lot to be said for nipping down the local computer outlet and using a standard monitor, when it screws up you use bin it and stick a new one in, available anywhere, doesnt mach support a touchscreen?, would be cool.

I think I am just going to pick up a 19" and be done with it. If I do this then I will need to make a pendant.

We are pretty much ripping everything out while trying to keep the power supplies. I don't feel like reverse engineering 140V servo motor controllers.

As for the monitor my current plan is to just pickup a 19" and plasma out the aluminum case with the new dimensions.
