I want to design and build a hardware based on Xilinx’s FPGA to communicate with a GPIB instrument without using any GPIB converter modules. I have spend some time on web to find out some data to understand how a GPIB device works (Such as signaling , Protocols , data flow sequences and so on ) but I didn’t find any useful data. Plz inform me from your opinions.
Thanks a lot

I have attached a HP tutorial on HPIB which is GPIB. If this is not enough then search for IEEE 488.1 (or 488.2) which is the current standards documentation for GPIB. I cannot upload this file due to IEEE restrictions but if you have access to the IEEE then you can upload it yourself.
I have used this documentation to successfully implement a GPIB PC controller in Windows Assembly language and Linux to control a 200mm wafer prober and Keithly Parametric analyser for Semiconductor charcterisation using a PIC 4550 USB as the GPIB controller.

Thank you Colbhaidh, the PDF file that you attached was really useful.
but I don't know the main difference between GPIB and HPIB.

HPIB became GPIB which became IEEE 488. At a signallevel, they are all compatible so the electronics to build a controller or slave can use th HPIB documentation. At the software level, IEEE 488 is a superset of HPIB and some original HPIB commands are (becoming) redundant.
For up to date IEEE 488 commands, search for ni488 (national instruments lab view related documentation). Also take a look at the linux-gpib-3.2.14 or later project.
However, again, for signal levels and communication protocols, the HPIB documentation should be ok.
