Firstly, I would like to know what type of wireless medium that can be obtained easily or cheap as I'm trying to cut down my budget.
I've heard of ZigBee and Bluetooth, anything else?
I might also need more guides on how to establish communication among them.
I have no knowledge on communication but basic PIC and PC programming.
I might have lots of questions later

Thank you very much.
Alvin.

Hi Alvin,

Nothing cheaper than Bluetooth and ZigBee comes to mind. By the way, they differ between each-other a lot.

May be you could tell us what features do you need in your communication system. For example: power consumption, transmit power, desired range, data rate, one way or two way. Also tell us what you are trying to accomplish.

Best,
- Nick

Hi Nick,

I'm trying to connect my PIC and a PC. My PIC has to connect to 30 solenoid water valves to control them.
The PIC should receive binaries data from the PC as the data might change from time to time.
It should be low on power consumption but I'm not sure the power needed to drive the valves. The range is about 2 -3 meters. Data range shouldn't be a problem. One way data direction should be ok (PC to PIC).
sorry if not detailed enough, i'll try to reply asap.
thanks alot

Alvin

If your range is 2-3 meters then why you are not going with the wired interface(RS232 or RS485).This would be more cheaper than zigbee or bluetooth.
If you are intresting in wireless communication than go for a zigbee.
The power needed to drive solenoid valve is different from the power required by the zigbee.

By the way, PIC18F4550, which you chose can be a USB slave, although it would take considerably more work to get USB going, compared to RS232.
