Current Division HELP?

This is a VERY elementary question ...I'm very confused with this Current div process... PLease Help me

hxxp://obrazki.elektroda.pl/96_1201062710.jpg

I understand the I total part for both equation. I'm a bit confused with th current division part. What is the 3 ohm from (6/(6+3).. is it the 3 near 20 v? or the one near Isc?

any help will be great... thanks

Re: Current Division HELP?

Hi,
It is the one near ISc, since you are finding ISc through it. The current from 20V is getting divided between 6 Ohms and 3 Ohms near ISc which are in parallel when ISc is short. In a parallel combination of two resistors R1,R2; the current through R1 = Iin*R2/(R1+R2), just as in a series combination of R1,R2 the voltage across R1 = Vin*R1/(R1+R2).
