I've been looking for sort of a simple lock, that would release a latch depending on the voltage supplied to it ... I am not sure if there is such a thing ...

Does anyone know a lock that operates in this manner ?

Thanks in advance

Re: Electronic Latch

What about 555-timer as Schmitt-Trigger?
It will switch something on when input voltage is below 1/3 of supply and will switch something off when input voltage is above 2/3 of supply.
Try it.

Re: Electronic Latch

isn't a transistor switch is enough ?

Electronic Latch

I was thinking maybe of something like a latching solenoid ... what I need it to do is when ever a voltage is applied to it, the bolt retracts ... whenever there is no voltage the bolt returns to the locking position ....

Maybe there is no such a thing -_-

Re: Electronic Latch

Latching solenoids shouldn't be that expensive ..

Electronic Latch

It is not about the cost, I am just not sure how it operates, could someone please explain how latching solenoid works?

Re: Electronic Latch

Hi l-o-s-t,

I'm gonna try to explain how the latching mechanism works.
Take a ballpoint, push the button, now you can write with it.
Push the button again and you can't write with it any more.
Now take two ballpoints, put them in your nose, have your
picture taken and upload it to Edaboard ! :D

Electronic Latch

Well ... sorry but I don't find that funny ...
Is it too much to ask for a simple useful answer .. ? I am asking for something that would work as I described above, a bolt that would unlock a door when a certain voltage is applied, whenever the voltage drops below that certain value, the bolt would go to it's locking position? All I need is a simple answer, is there such a thing out there that would do the above? and does latching solenoid does the job?

Re: Electronic Latch

If you want to use it for door locking purpose,
you can try this product call "electric door strike".
https://www.smarthome.com/5192.html

Basically, the door operate like normal manual door,
where you have to turn the knob to open the door.
You can release the "door strike" using a voltage (example 12V)
applied to the strike.
The setup is similar in activating a relay.

Another product is the magnetic lock.
It works opposite, which requires power to lock the door.
Door strike, can lock the door without power.

Latching solenoid can also do the work.
It works also like a relay.
But the door locking mechanism will
not be compatiable to conventional door lock.
The door strike can be install easy,
and backward compatible to conventional manual door knob lock.

Hopes this can provide you with more idea.
