Hello!!! Everyone i am from India and have a vodafone sim on which GPRS is activated.
Which is working fine on all phones.

But it is not working with GPRS Module SIM900A.

While other GPRS activated sims like Idea and Airtel are working with SIM900A what could be the possible problem.

I have to send data on a TCP Server with this SIM, what it is not working with Vodafone, i want to know the reason.

Code ASM - [expand]
1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8
9
AT+CGATT=1
AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","portalnmms"
AT+CSTT="portalnmms","",""
AT+CIICR
AT+CIFSR
AT+CIPSTATUS
AT+CIPSTART="TCP","IP Address","5000"
OK
+PDP: DEACT

Here i am getting error here. :-(

While everything is fine with airtel and idea

airtel apn is airtelgprs.com
idea apn is internet

I had checked the vodafone apn it is portalnmms not www in my case.
even putting www is showing error at at+ciicr command

Please help me, if anyone knows

The module Sim900 is capable of communicating on 900Mhz only whereas the Vodaphone networks communicate on 1800Mhz.
Cheers

Hello!! pranam77

Where it is written, can you show me those links so that i can understand all this properly.
And tell my seniors regarding this problem.

Earlier i was using SIM300 which was working fine with vodafone sim but the problem was that the connection breaks after sometime.

Its not required to be written anywhere to express ones views. What i wrote is what i remembered. May be i am wrong but as i have seen or practically experienced, i have never used a SIM900 module for 1800 band.

Okay!!
Actually i have to convince my seniors regarding this problem.
That's why i thought that maybe you had read somewhere that it doesn't support the 1800MHz Band

Found These Features of SIM900
High Quality Product (Not hobby grade)
Quad-Band GSM/GPRS
850/ 900/ 1800/ 1900 MHz
Built in RS232 Level Converter
(MAX3232)
Configurable baud rate
SMA connector with GSM L Type
Antenna.
Built in SIM Card holder.

As you have mentioned earlier, the Airtel and Idea (Formerly Spice) both operate on 900Mhz band. As i presume BSNL too shud have no problems working with SIM900. Try out.
Cheers

And if doesn't support 1800MHz Band then, why messages are going from this module.

AT+CMGF=1
AT+CMGS="Mobile Number"
> Message and then CTRL+A

This works, it means Vodafone SIM is supported.
Maybe GPRS is not supported.

I am checking something with the AT+CBAND?

When testing with Vodafone SIM getting this

AT+CBAND?
+CBAND: EGSM_MODE,ALL_BAND
OK

What does this means.

When using IDEA sim i get this.
AT+CBAND?
+CBAND: DCS_MODE,ALL_BAND

As i had already told that idea and airtel sim are working properly while vodafone is not working.
So i decided to change the Band of Vodafone sim
AT+CBAND="DCS_MODE"
OK
but after that even AT+CGATT=1 command giving error

Can any one tell me the meanings of these CBAND parameters

Now the most weird thing.

I am having one more Vodafone SIM and that one is working for GPRS, really very strange. The only difference between these two sims is that the SIM which is working is H1 Types SIM while the other one which is not working has H2 written on it.

If there is anyone who can suggest me something on this, please help me.

We are a manufacturer of modem, and distributor of Wavecom module for 10 years. We hope you can tell me more about your question.

We have the capacity of desinging and making modem, so we also has the problem to do yours'.

"I am also facing similar problem with SIM900A. in my case, vodafone and T24 SIM work, while Idea,Airtel donot work. Network is not getting acquired with Airtel and Idea. "

For idea and airtel i get
AT+CBAND?
+CBAND: EGSM_MODE,ALL_BAND
OK

while for vodafone and T24, i get
AT+CBAND?
+CBAND: DCS_MODE,ALL_BAND
OK

In case of Idea and Airtel, i gave the following command to change to DCS_MODE
AT+CBAND="DCS_MODE"
OK
then I get
AT+CBAND?
+CBAND: DCS_MODE
OK
Still, network does not get acquired in airtel and idea. Please give some hints, how to resolve this?

-Thanks,
Kishore"

the apn for vodafone is "www"
if you enter wrong apn there possibility of getting error....

I am having two vodafone sims.
One is H1 and another one is H2

H1 sim works fine with APN "www", while the H2 Vodafone sims gives error, when typing this command AT+CIICR

While its works fine with "portalnmms" but AT+CIPSTART command doesn't work.
In short vodafone sim H2 is not working.

i think before sending AT+CIICR command have you checke response of AT+COPS and AT+CREG commands?

We had somewhat same issue earlier. We found that H1 sim cards are working whereas H2 sim cards are NOT. We paid special attention to the SIM card tracks going from the GSM module to the SIM card holder (we made it shorter) & it worked. You may try it out.

I am using the module from another company and hence i can't change the tracks.
Any other suggestion will be helpful.
By the way what is the logic behind the shorter tracks.

I am using this Module

may be ur simcard is the problem.sometimes ceratin simcards have manufacture problems.u can try another sim card

That sim is working absolutely fine in Mobile Phones.
But not working with SIM Module only GPRS Part (GSM Module is working fine.)

So i dont think this is the issue with SIM card manufacturing fault.

What country are you in as the SIM900A is restricted to work in some Asian countries only.

Cheers
