I've found the problem, assisted by your suggestions. It was a cap in the LV power supply. All now appears OK.

This scope appears to start up OK: the timebase is working and a horizontal trace appears which responds to the up/down and L/R controls. However after a few seconds the trace vanishes.
Further investigation reveals that the trace is stable for maybe 5 or 10 seconds, then over a few seconds...
