Dear sir,
I suggest you study some IEEE communication Protocol such I2C and Implement it with verilog or VHDL. Then try to burn your FPGA to Test it in real world . Practical stuff are more more better than just simulation for a LAB.

I am afraid I do not get exactly your question . What is your input voltage and how small you need it to be? ?
There are a lot of small new brand transformer today that you can buy one and use with a bridge .
But, If you want to make it really small it must be a switching power supply ...
If I was you, I never drill any board ,My suggestion : Use plenty of flux. Then try to heat the remained lead with your iron.
For whom that do not know when and where use flux:
1- If you want to melt a solder that had been melt before .
2- Used with some board or any materials that...
It is possible but it will not solve your problem and also resistor just waste your power .
In cars they use mechanical solution and when the window goes up the shaft will be released .
In your case if you want solve it with electronic you should sense the current and when it reach to high...
There is two type of interrupt : 1- software 2- hardware
Those interrupt that happen in PCI is a software interrupt , any PCI card have a processor when you put it in PCI slot this processor turn on and send some specific data to the RAM and then toward CPU . CPU as sooon as receiving the data...
The problem solved , but I want to teach every one a good way to check any DC or even some Ac type motor function by simply connecting your MM to the motor's wires and turning the shaft with your hand , you should see some voltage that change with your turning speed
