what prpblems are you facing..?
Heres an example of using it,using the handyboard(Motorolla 68hC11)..
However its programmed in Interactive C.
You Just need to program the threshold value into the micro(0 to 255)...and when the sensor reaches tht value..the micro triggers an output...

well..according to the circuit ,the volage can swing from 0v(no emittter) to around 5V(when emitter is in full view)

From the schematic ,i would say that the serial port is being used to control the speed and direction of the stepper....The microcontroller,that is the 89c2051 is just decoding the serial commands and delivering appropriate step signals to the stepper.
You could avoid using the serial...
