I am in correspondence with an IC manufacturer in Taiwan that makes piezo sound modules similar to what you might find in cheap electronic toys.

I can't find a toy gun with these sounds near me. It seems they have been replaced with newer tech. I would really like to find an IC. I was hoping to turn this into a surface mount workshop for some EE students.

Don't forget to properly label and describe the devices in the library. I like to list out some distributer sku numbers so when its time to assemble the BOM I can find the parts easy.
Take a look at ti's bq2014H. It drives LEDs based on estimated charge and can link serially to your MCU. The application circuit in the data sheet is pretty strait forward on how to set it up. Its surface mount, but its SOIC so its easy to do by hand.
Its kinda expensive in single quantities...
