To create inductor.
If current flows through an inductor, electro magnetic field will create.
Magnetic field density with respect to current and number of turns.
If the motor winding MMF less than normal requirement, then the speed will be reduced in general AC (1ph/3ph induction) motors. It may increase the speed in DC Motors(Speed control).
Generally wires considered as single turn inductor. you cannot get the required magnetic field strength to drive the motor.
