Which component can be used with PIC16f877a to detect faults?

Anyone of you have idea about fault detection, such as short or open circuit, ground fault ans so on. Which component can be used to with PIC16f877a to detect the fault? Please give me some advices.

Hi

There are many circuit for measuring fult you can use for instance an INA138 from TI and a comperator to know the DC current flow in your circuit

or you can use a simple circuit to indicate current flow only using NPN transistor
