After the 8008, the 8080 was introduced. It featured a drastically improved instruction set. Later, the 8085 was introduced; It featured a few new instructions, but its main advantage was that it incorporated many of the hardware functions that external ICs performed for the 8080.

It's interesting to note that Intel introduced the 4004 primarily as a way of increasing the demand for dynamic RAM chips. At the time the 4004 was introduced, memory chips were Intel's main product.
