What is the term Eb/No used for?

Hey,
Can anyone tell, what is the term used for Eb/No???..
Is it same as SNR??

Take a look at "Digital Communications", Bernard Sklar for a detailed discussion. (I only have a paper copy.)

SNR is an analog communication figure of merit. It has a digital counterpart, Eb/No, where Eb is the signal power S, times the bit time, Tb. No is noise power spectral density, and can be described as noise power N divided by bandwidth W. This is a quote from page 117 of Sklar's book near equation 3.29 .

I recommend that you run down a copy of the book and read the applicable sections.

Hi,

Eb/N0 is the ratio of energy contained in a symbol of duration say T to the noise power spectral density. It is the digital counterpart of SNR.

Eb is the signal in one bit and N0 is power specral density of the noise
for calculate SNR u must:
calcul the power of noise = B*N0, wher B is the bandwith of reciever
calcule the power of the signal = Eb/Tb, wher Tb is the bit transmission interval

read sklar for accurate answer . neways eb/no is a normalized version of SNR for digital systems . normalized by bit rate aand bandwidth. it is also dimension less
