What is the main issue with comms protocols?

Ive lost count of the number of job ads which say the following...

  • Experience working with TCP-IP, UDP, CAN, SPI, UART, I2C and USB communication protocols

They dont want you to be able to program them in a micro....just want you to have experience.

What issues are they concerned about, presumbly noise issues and bit error rate?
