switched line vs dedicated line

Hi friends,

I find E1/T1 carriers are calling as leased lines/dedicated lines.
Any one of you please tell me what is meant by leased lines/dedicated lines.

Thanks in Advance,
Goud

what is meant by leaseline

OK. At home you have a dail-up line for your telephone you first have to dail a number to get a connection to a different party. OK?. A leased line or dedicated line is simply a line that is always connected between two or more users. If this was a phone line it would be a permanent phone line that you would simply pick-up and you had the other party on the phone without dailing the number first. They normally make a permenent connection in the switch board for this !.

Elaborating the above statement ,....

Dedicated line

It is the dedicated connection between two (or more) subscribers in a network for data transfer . No external subscriber can break this dedicated connection untill and unless the data transfer between those subscribers are completed . because it generates BUSY signal in the Dedicated line .

Leased line

It is the connected line which is leased for certain amount of data transfer or for certain time to data transfer between two or more subscribers from any other private or government communicating line for certain money for business purpose.

Dedicated line
- A dedicated line is a telecommunications path between two points that is available 24 hours a day for use by a designated user (individual or company). It needs to be connected to the other end for every call or data transfer( i.e modem connection should be established for each data tranfer). It is not shared in common among multiple users as dial-up lines are. A dedicated line can be a physical path owned by the user or rented from a telephone company, in which case it is called a leased line. A synonym is nonswitched line (as opposed to a switched or dial-up line).

Leased line

- A leased line is a telephone line that has been leased for private use which is connected between end to end always(i.e modems are always connected). In some contexts, it's called a dedicated line because intruding the line will cause immediate disconnection due to improper load termination. A leased line is usually contrasted with a switched line or dial-up line.

Typically, large companies rent leased lines from the telephone message carriers (such as AT&T) to interconnect different geographic locations in their company. The alternative is to buy and maintain their own private lines or, increasingly perhaps, to use the public switched lines with secure message protocols. (This is called tunneling.)
