bit banging?

Bit banging means you don't use a UART. You emulate a serial signal using software. http://www.piclist.org/techref/microchip/rs232.htm has some examples in assembly.

I understand some C compilers will do it for you. If I'm mistaken, someone please correct me.

I2C or SPI communication from PC to the target device (through an interface hardware) is bit-banging.
