Xilinx or Altera?

Hello friends,

Probably it is a tedious question for this forum but I am wandaring if I have to select Xilinx or Altera as a FPGA manifacturer.

The feature under concern for me are:

1. Price
2. Flexibility
3. DSP Libraries
4. Connection with Mathworks' Simulink
5. Simple hardware development tools

Thanks for your time!

Re: Xilinx or Altera?

i think that is better Xilin.
Probably you right targert is Spartan II or III FPGA.
Bye.

Re: Xilinx or Altera?

I think that you should Alteral chip because it is very cheap and Alteal Comp. support free many tool. The software deverlope of Alteral also is very simplier than Xilinx. If you have more conditions, you can choice Xilinx chip

Re: Xilinx or Altera?

Hi dora,

I am using Xilinx FPGA's (XC4000, Spartan II and Virtex II) for over
6 years and I did not have any problems (speed, price ...) with them.

So I would choose Xilinx again.

Xilinx or @ltera?

Both of Xilinx and Altera have all features as you show. So, you can choose one of them or both. However Xilinx is lightly cheaper.

Re: Xilinx or Altera?

Dora,

If I were you, I selected a third supplier and let the big two fight each other with features. Then you will get the best deal on price, support, etc.

Regards,

L

Re: Xilinx or Altera?

I think that @Itera tools more easy and user friendly.
Last chips have high performance (Stratix II)
and low price (newest Cyclone II - not in production yet)

Re: Xilinx or Altera?

Ok gentlemem,

As far as I undestand as many people as much prefferencies.

But it's good that both companies have all the fieatures I have mentioned!

So it seems the choice is not so important

Ok,
Both vendors satisfy your requirement but, for my experience, I think that an other requirement must be held in consideration.
The local F.A.E. support.
Many times the difference is given does not give the tools or from the devices but from the support of the supplier.

Xilinx or @ltera?

just check out whose support is availbale locally or very near to u. that would be a steal

Xilinx or @ltera?

well for some application Xilinx is good and for others its Altera. I have used Altera devices for some CDMA project where i felt some deficiencies on Alter. So its up to application.
To my guess to want to have an FPGA board with multidimention application for that case u should ignore the price thing and concentrate on flexibility. If its so i recommend Xilinx

Re: Xilinx or Altera?

Deficiencies on Altera?

Shoaib can you be more specific?
Probably this information is importent for me.

Can you describe your difficulties with Altera for
your CDMA project. Do you know for sure that Xilinx is better in this respect?

thanks!

Re: Xilinx or Altera?

Also about Link to Matlab,

Is there someone with big experiance with it?

Can he compare the altera dsp builder with the equivalent xilinx tool.
How the modelsim link which mathworks currently announce can fit with these tools?

Can someone describe the procedure of moving of the design from matlab to FPGA and if posible please give some assesment on it.

My current undestandings are that in simulink there is some precompiled FPGA primitives which have certain Simulink behaviour. You can use it and then just assemble the simulink diagram using this primitives and port for the certain FPGA.

Is on the market some more flexible tool for generation of the VHDL code directly from the any simulink model?

Thanks!
dora

Re: Xilinx or Altera?

About link to MATLAB.
Can anyone knows it there is a c code avaliable for rapid simulation.
Thanks
Gandalf

Re: Xilinx or Altera?

As both r leading vendors, as some body mentioned u have to see the factors which r in ur hand, like

1) loacl support
2)web support (i mean immediate response)
3)good documentation
4)familiarity with the tools

Re: Xilinx or Altera?

If you consider DSP in FPGA then Xilinx is a better choice

Xilinx or @ltera?

In Europe,Xilinx use more widely than @ltera
In Asian,It is @ltera

Re: Xilinx or Altera?

I have the same problem:
I've to create a design in simulink, but using Altera DSP builder or Xilinx System generator. I don't know which board I'll use.
what is the best toolbox?
And then I've to translate simulink model on vhdl. It's possible? I'll obtain a good vhdl?

Regards

Re: Xilinx or Altera?

Until now I believe that Xilinx is leading the market with the highest market share "price and quantity"
