In Hardware industry when we talk about the verification of a particular block of IP, what does IP mean in this sense? I know IP means Internet Protocol but that does not seem appropriate here.

Intelectual property? Usually some firmware or code for the FPGA/ASIC, correct?

RFMW is correct. Intellectual Property is commonly abbreviated down to IP. IP is anything that is thought of but not physical, such as software or some mathematical method although the latter is not patentable in most countries. It can be protected as a trade secret which is some information that is not given to others.

In electronic design a semiconductor intellectual property core, IP core, or IP block is a reusable unit of logic, cell, or chip layout design that is the intellectual property of one party. IP cores may be licensed to another party or can be owned and used by a single party alone.
