i'm try to reverse engineer a board.

anyone recommend what possible this SMD component could be?
 

Could be a lot of different devices.

Is impossible to determine what is, but you can try to see if is a voltage regulator using a multimeter.
 

Hi,

it surely looks a lot like a voltage regulator or a transistor, but it could be a lot of chips... Sometime you could google the chips's marking and be lucky...
 

Your photo is too dark to clearly read the markings. Maybe M4 or N4. Look closely, and then go here:
