Varying charge/discharge time of capacitor

Hello,
How can I vary the charge and discharge time of a capacitor using just resistors or potentiometers?
Assuming the input voltage to the circuit is constant, say 12v.

I am basicaly interested in varying the brightness of a led or another lamp, thus creating a passive attack release circuit.

In order to vary the charge/discharge rate I have found this circuit and I have tested the attack release first part

It seems to behave as expected, but the only problem is that the full brightness of the led also changes when I adjust the attack resistor.
How can I keep the full brightness of the led (the led connected parallel to the capacitor)
