Using PIC18f252 to display speed of motors on LCD

id like to display my speed at which my micromouse travels using a pic18f252 on a LCD...as well as if possible the distance from the obstacle ... need urgent guidance thank you...
 

Use Infrared sensors to detect the revolutions of the motors per minute, this may be of help to you

my micro mouse kit has a very thin wheel compared to the above link....what u think i can do in that case???
 

i suggest hall effect sensor. You need to attach a small magnet in the wheel of your micromouse.

hall effect sensor is a magnetic sensor. Two type of sensors are awailable. One is a switch. Another is analog . I think switch is more usefull for you . In switch sensor when an north pole comes near the sensor it get activated. And when south pole, deactivated.
