USB-UART adapter is a useful item in every electronics workshop for running microprocessor circuits.

One of the main advantages of this device is that it is equipped with full electrical isolation between the computer and the device. It is important in two cases:
  • when started device is not galvanically isolated from the power mains 230V
  • when you want to be sure that the device will not be powered by a serial port

The circuit is based on popular FTDI232RL and ADUM1201 from AD, which provides the separation. The circuit is the combination of application schematics of these circuits.

Attachment to the original thread includes design in KiCAD.

The PCB is designed so that it withstands the difference of potential on the computer and the device, what is not more than 230V of effective value.

Be careful while making and using this construction because 230V can be harmful to your health! It is recommended that this design should be made by professional electronics and not beginners!
