Pass Transistor

what is the function of pass transistor in the high current power supply design?

Re: Pass Transistor

Pass transistor is usually defined as transistor between Vin and Vout of a linear regulator.

For a high current power supply, generally SMPS is applied for high efficiency reason. If so, there will not be pass transistor.
However, for some applications in which low noise is a concern, linear regulator will be used between SMPS output and load to improve noise performance. Of course this will seriously decrease efficiency.
