The L4976 will then be more than enough. You could use it as price is only $2. 1A capacity is okay, as it gives him scope to use larger loads if necessary.
If you want to use 4xAA cell you can by cheap linear low drop-out DC-DC converter MIC5205-3.3BM5 for 3V3 or MIC5205-5.0BM5 for 5V0. If you want to use 2xAA cell you can use MAX1795 (for changing output voltage you need in only one jumper).
