Of course it can. Microchip is not the only company that makes protocol handlers for IrDA. Check Texas Instruments and Maxim/Dallas. I'm sure there are others. I am experimenting with IrDA myself. I have the TIR1000 from TI. It is a stand alone IrDA encoder/decoder (protocol handler). I am using a MAX3120 from Maxim/Dallas for the transceiver. Connect transceiver to the protocol handler. Add a PIN photodiode and an IRLED to the transceiver. There are also transceivers that have the photodiode and LED built in. Check Vishay and Avago for those. Connect UART control to the host controller. There are also protocol handlers that have a built in UART. I think Maxim/Dallas has those. I have not built any devices yet, but I eventually want to use IrDA and a PIC18F2550 to interface with my PC's USB port (that'll be fun.) Meanwhile I hope this info helps. Peace.
