esc design sensorless

I'm looking for information on how to drive a model brushless 3 phase motor. There are many electronic speed controllers (ESCs) available that convert a radio control (RC) servo PWM signal into a motor drive but I want to design my own. I need to know how the ESC senses what the motor is doing (if at all). Some folks say that there is some feedback taking place in the form of the controller sensing the back EMF from the motor?

Thanks in advance :D
