I have an equipment which draws ~40 A (AC) when it is in operation and 3 A when it is idling. I want to know whether this equipment is working. I only have access to power lines. Can I use 5A Hall Effect-Based Linear Current Sensor for this (based on **broken link removed**)?

Can I split the current 5+35 so that I can use the 5A branch for measuring?

My requirement is a kind of switch so that I can know the equipment is working.

For a low budget you may consider to improvise the AC line current detection circuit, see details here:
**broken link removed**

Need to adapt circuit to 30-40 Amps so you may reduce the value for 100k resistor or the number of turns for the pick-up coil.

You may also consider using Magnelab SCT-0750-005 current sensor. The transducer output at three Amps is 0.2 Volt, and 2.66 volt at 40 Amps.

Good luck
