How the receive measure the distance to satellite in GPS or Galileo?

I know that satellites transmit PRN codes and information, then the receiver can identify the satellite from its unique PRN code , but how does it measure the range or distance to satellite?

i think that the receive correlate the received code with localy generated one , the the correlation value has a relation with the time difference between the 2 codes. is that true ?
