power supply

i am currently doing a power supply which produce 240VDC from 240VAC. Not knowing the reason, the basic power supply which consist only of a bridge rectifier (RS606) and a capacitor (100uF, 240V) can output 330VDC. May i know why the power supply can step up the voltage to 330VDC? Thanks

240V is the RMS voltage. The peak value is sqrt(2) higher so around 340V. With no load the capacitor will charge to the peak voltage, less a couple of diode drops.
