It depends how > 1W you want (and the target cost and efficiency) as to the ideal sort of converter/regulator.
At the cheap, (usually inefficient), low power end, you could use something like a 555 (or similar rail-rail oscillator) driving a capacitor/diode charge pump - like **broken link removed** - followed by a 7805 type linear regulator.
(Yes, even though most of these circuits appear to be driven from a positive supply, you can equally power them from a 'negative' supply. Just connect the devices' '+' input to ground, and their '-' input to your -15V rail).
While you could build a discrete design (and given your preference for an integrated transisor), if you can spare a few $'s, for the power level you want I'd probably suggest a DC/DC converter module, such as: **broken link removed**
(powering it as I described above). Don't forget than any switching converter will have switching products present as ripple on the output though (which may/may not matter depending on your application)...
