What is this copper plate? What is that for?
My DVD player LCD displays "push protect", what is the common cause of trouble?

That is a screening plate. The message means something is overloading the power supply I think (search internet for more details). It could be a shorted or low impedance external speaker.

Either to prevent the player from causing RF interference or to prevent RF from interfering with it, or both.
