The input current usually goes up when stalled or overloaded. This can be sensed. A more sophisticated method is to use a tachometer to measure the shaft rotation speed.
They are not spikes, they are a constant value of excess current. You can measure the current with a shunt in the power line, but there are safety precautions to follow. There are probably hall effect current sensors you could use, but I do not know of any specific ones.
P=K*torque*current for a constant input voltage.
So when motor overload,the current will rising,we only detect input current,we can detect overload condition.
motor operation condition and specifications ??? tachometer is a good solution but some times its not suitable, like in case of low speed motors. Currents check is "the best" solution becase of response time.
If you are using AC power best solution is to measure current through current transformer that eliminates lethal voltages present in detection circuit. If the current flowing to motor is high enough you can make this transformer with wire wounded around wire that is powering the motor. But you have to put windings only around one powering wire if you are using single or triphase power supply to the motor.
