I'm in the process of designing an electrical version of an existing board game.

In my last part on the subject I suggested that I was planning to use stereo jack plugs.

However, I am now considering an alternative. Spring loaded (pogo) connectors in the base of my pieces and concentric copper circles on the board. To aid location of the pieces (apart from a small lip) and to ensure a good connection due to the lack of weight in the pieces, I was considering using magnets in the base and the board. Nothing massive or strong, the type you'd find in a child's horse shoe magnet toy.

I appreciate there is a risk with contamination of metal with this, so plan to make sure the gaps between magnets and contacts (and also between the contacts) are as large as possible.

Apart from the risk of contamination, is there likely to be any interference in a5v digital serial signal?

Cool.

No, no "moving" parts so no inductance. Just a low static magnetic field.
