Chunky LCD display

Hello Friends,

I need to make a large LCD type display about 1 meter by 0.5 meter with characters about 40 mm wide X 80 mm high.

The characters do not change very often and ultra fast response is not required.

Does any one have any idea where I may start looking for off the shelf or DIY product?

A few years back everyone was talking about light emitting polymer sheets but no one knows about them now.

If you have examined the battery level meter on the side of some Duracel
batteries, even something like that would be fine.

Thanks

Spartacus

or you can use a 7-segment controller to run a bunch of discrete LED's mounted in squares like a 7-segment, but BIG! This way you can mount them into a nice black backround board or somthing and make it look nice.
You may have to use 4-5 parallel LED's in each segment for letters that big, so a simple 7-segment controller may not be powerful enough. In that case, connect the 7-segment conroller to one or more npn bjt (3904) which should be able to drive the 5*20mA for super brite LED with no problem. Oh you should have a 220Ohm resistor in series with that bjt if you run it like this. Maybe 680 or 1k if it's too bright on the first try.

Big LCD's are expensive and fragile - do you need LCD?
