Is PIC18F4455 good to make digital filter?

Has anyone around tried to make a digital filter using PIC18f as it is shown in application note an854 from microchip?

My impression is that if it works, it can be a quite cheap dsp...

The dsPIC series make excellent DSP processors and cost about the same as many 18F chips.

What about development tools for dsPIC? Can mplab and microchip c compiler be used also for dsPIC?

Concerning debuging tools: I have already seen that my ICD2 recognizes some dsPICs.

Of course MPLAB and an ICE or ICD2 are ideal for the dsPIC chips. C30 may even have a demo version.
