Interfacing a circuit, using discrete components, with the parallel port(LPT)

hai all
this is to help my friend
he wanted to interface a circuit using discrete components to the parallel port(lpt)
and read 8 bit data from the circuit
there will be two different inputs and a latch is there to switch over from one to another.he will write a program in c to process the datas.our question is that how can we use the lpt as an input port.how can we controll the latch using the program?which pin of the port can be used to control the port?

Hi there there are several ways of communicating with the PC.
you want to use the parallel port?
is there any program you are obliged to work with?
VB is easier more than C++ if you need graphical interface
